Principles of Unity

  • Jesus desires that his followers may be one as he and the Father are one (John 17).

  • Jesus calls believers through the Spirit to prioritize loving one another as a distinctive mark of his followers (John 13:34-36, 17:23; Mark 12:28–34; 1 Peter 1:22, 4:8; 1 John 3:23).

  • The shared life of believers should allow others to experience the shared life of the Triune God (1 John 1:1-4).

  • Jesus teaches that there are other followers from different groups (Mark 9:38-41).

  • Believers should make efforts to support each other in following the Lord and not disputes and judgment (Rm 14).

  • As there is one Spirit, believers should seek the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3-4).

  • Jesús desea que sus seguidores sean uno como él y el Padre son uno (Juan 17).

  • Jesús llama a los creyentes a través del Espíritu a priorizar el amarse unos a otros como una marca distintiva de sus seguidores (Juan 13:34-36, 17:23; Marcos 12:28-34; 1 Pedro 1:22, 4:8; 1 Juan 3:23).

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son*], who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic** and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre Todopoderoso, Creador del cielo y de la tierra, de todo lo visible y lo invisible.

Creo en un solo Seńor, Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, nacido del Padre antes de todos los siglos: Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, no creado, de la misma naturaleza del Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; que por nosotros, los hombres, y por nuestra salvación bajó del cielo, y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María, la Virgen, y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato; padeció y fue sepultado, y resucitó al tercer día, según las Escrituras, y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a, vivos y muertos, y su reino no tendrá fin.

*The section is in brackets to honor the perspectives of Eastern Christians of the Orthodox Churches who do not hold to this faith expression.

** The word “catholic” means universal. All believers who hold the Nicene faith believe in a universal body of believers. Consequently, not all believers understand “catholic” to mean the Roman Catholic Church.

The Nicene Creed has been a source of shared beliefs among followers of Jesus since 325. This includes Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Messianic Jews, and other believers.

El Credo de Nicea ha sido una fuente de creencias compartidas entre los seguidores de Jesús desde el año 325. Esto incluye a católicos, ortodoxos, protestantes, judíos mesiánicos y otros creyentes.
